These diagnostic instruments are easy to use one-on-one assessments to quickly assess students’ early reading skills, helping teachers provide targeted instruction so that students improve as readers. The TPRI and Tejas LEE benchmark assessments are given 3 times per year.
TPRI and Tejas LEE can be used:
The 1st and 2nd grade editions of TPRI and Tejas LEE are available on CLI Engage at no cost to all Texas public school districts and charter schools. On CLI Engage, TPRI and Tejas LEE offer three waves of assessment with benchmarks and function like the other assessments on the platform, including leveraging integrated small grouping features (linked to the CIRCLE Activity Collection) and reporting tools.
The Screening Section is a brief assessment for identification of students who may be at risk for reading difficulties. Its primary purpose is to predict for teachers which of their students may need additional or intensive reading instruction in order to meet their grade level goals. The Screening Section also allows teachers to quickly gather information on students who are Still Developing (SD) important reading concepts in certain areas and would benefit from additional instruction.
TPRI has a separate Screening Section and Inventory Section. The Screening section for TPRI is included in first grade at Beginning and End of Year, and in second grade just at Beginning of Year.
Note: Tejas LEE does not have a screening section.
The Inventory Section allows teachers to acquire more data to help match reading instruction with specific student needs. This additional information can assist teachers and administrators as they assemble educational resources and plan the most effective instruction possible for students. Teachers can administer portions of the inventory with students who score Still Developing (SD) on the Screening Section.
Information derived from the TPRI and Tejas LEE will assist teachers in planning targeted instruction for their students. There are many additional tools available, including resources to help teachers analyze data, assist in helping determine students for intervention, and group students for differentiated instruction.
For Tejas LEE, guidance is provided on how teachers can use the Inventory results for a screening purpose. Additional information and downloadable materials will be available in August.
During BOY, LEAs must administer a literacy assessment tool within the first 20 school days for all 1st grade students who were not assessed for dyslexia (as kindergarteners) at EOY last year (2019-2020), per the emergency rule. Teachers must use an approved 1st grade literacy assessment, such as TPRI/Tejas LEE, another approved tool (more information found here) or a district-level committee selected alternative as per TEC§28.006. LEAs should plan to screen 1st grade students for dyslexia following established requirements by January 31. More information regarding this can be found on TEA’s Data Driven Instruction website.
